Antique-Style vs True Antique Engagement Rings: What to Know

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

A true antique engagement ring was made at least 100 years ago and comes with its history, wear and fixed size. An antique-style ring is newly made in a period design, so you choose the stone, metal and size, and it arrives with a warranty. Both can be beautiful. The right one depends on how much uncertainty you are willing to buy along with the romance.

What counts as an antique engagement ring?

In the jewelry trade, "antique" usually means a piece at least 100 years old. "Vintage" is looser and often covers rings from roughly 20 to 99 years old. "Antique-style" or "vintage-inspired" means the ring is new but borrows the motifs of an earlier era: milgrain edges, filigree, geometric step patterns, leaf and scroll work.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A 1920s ring has lived a full life before it reaches you. Prongs thin out, shanks wear down at the base, and old-cut stones may carry chips that were invisible under a century of grime. A new ring in an antique style starts at zero.

Antique engagement rings by era: Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco

Most antique and antique-style designs trace back to three periods. Knowing their signatures helps you describe what you want, whether you are hunting at estate sales or ordering new.

Era Approx. dates Design hallmarks Typical stones and metals
Victorian 1837–1901 Romantic motifs: flowers, hearts, serpents, clusters; high, closed-back settings Old mine cut diamonds, garnets, pearls, turquoise; yellow and rose gold
Edwardian about 1901–1915 Lace-like filigree, milgrain beading, bows and garlands; light, airy look Old European cut diamonds, sapphires, pearls; platinum, often over gold
Art Deco about 1920–1935 Geometry: step patterns, sharp symmetry, calibré-cut colored accents, hexagons and fans Old European, early emerald and baguette cuts; platinum and white gold; sapphires, emeralds, black onyx accents
Antique-style (new) Made today Any of the above motifs, built to modern structural standards Your choice: natural or lab diamond, moissanite, colored stones; 14K/18K gold or platinum

Antique vs antique-style: sizing, warranty and condition

This is where most of the practical difference lives. A one-of-a-kind antique is sold as-is, and every change you make to it is a change to its history.

Question True antique ring Antique-style ring from Segal
Can I choose the stone? No. You buy the stone that is in it Yes: natural diamond, lab-created diamond, premium moissanite or colored stones, by carat
Can I choose the metal? No 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold; platinum on many styles
Sizing Resizing an old shank can stress filigree and solder joints; some rings cannot be sized much Made to your size; free resizing within 60 days
Condition Worn prongs, thin shanks and chipped old-cut stones are common; inspect closely New metal and stones, set in Los Angeles
Warranty Usually none beyond the seller's return window Lifetime warranty and lifetime upgrade
See it before buying Only the single physical ring Product photos switch to your exact metal and stone; a $199 replica in your size is available

None of this makes a true antique a bad choice. If a particular ring belonged to a grandmother, nothing new replaces it. But if what you love is the look, a new ring gives you the look without the repair bill.

How to buy an antique-style engagement ring online

Period designs are detailed, and detail is hard to judge on a screen. These steps take the guessing out of it.

  • Pick the era you are drawn to first, then the stone shape. Art Deco suits emerald and pear shapes; Edwardian suits rounds and ovals.
  • Choose your metal and stone on the product page. The main photo switches to that exact metal and stone variant, so you see the version you are buying.
  • Check the center size against our size charts: a 1 ct round measures about 6.5 mm across, a 1 ct pear about 9 x 5.4 mm.
  • Order the $199 Try It In Real Life replica in your size (4–13, half sizes included) to see the filigree and proportions on your hand. You keep it, and the full $199 is credited on orders of $1,000 or more.
  • If you have a photo of a real antique you love, use our custom ring from a photo service to have it recreated.

Are antique engagement rings cheaper?

Sometimes, but not reliably. Price on an antique depends on the stone, the maker, the condition and the dealer's sourcing. Old-cut diamonds are often priced differently from modern cuts, and a ring that needs re-tipping or a new shank adds cost after purchase. With a new antique-style ring the price is set by choices you control: carat, stone type and metal. Our pear halo Janet designs start from $2,195; Art Deco Reagan styles start from $5,152. Frequently asked questions

How old does a ring have to be to be antique? The common trade definition is 100 years or older. Rings from roughly 20 to 99 years old are usually called vintage, and new rings in older designs are called antique-style or vintage-inspired.

Is it bad luck to wear an antique engagement ring? That is a matter of personal belief. Practically, the bigger question is condition: have a jeweler check prongs, shank thickness and the stone for chips before you commit.

Can an antique-style ring be resized? Yes. Our rings are made to your size, and resizing is free within 60 days. Very old rings with filigree or tension-sensitive settings may not resize as easily.

Which era is best for an emerald cut or pear stone? Art Deco designs were built around geometric and elongated shapes, so emerald cut and pear stones fit them naturally. Victorian halos also frame pears well.

Can I see an antique-style ring before paying for the real thing? Yes. Our $199 Try It In Real Life replica is made in any ring design in your size. You keep it, and the full $199 is credited toward orders of $1,000 or more.
