Custom Engagement Ring From a Photo: Process, Cost and Approval

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

To get a custom engagement ring from a photo, send us the picture through our custom ring from photo page, tell us the stone, metal and size, and approve the design before anything is cast. Price follows the same drivers as any ring: metal, stone type and carat. A $199 replica lets you hold the shape first. Here is the process step by step and what you approve along the way.

Can you make an engagement ring from a photo?

Yes. A photo is one of the best starting points we can get. It shows the proportions, the setting style and the mood far better than a written description. It might be a ring you saw on social media, a family heirloom that cannot be worn anymore, a sketch on a napkin or a screenshot from a film.

We use the photo as a reference, not a template. Our team in Los Angeles translates it into a ring built for your stone, your finger size and daily wear. That often means small engineering decisions the photo cannot show: how thick the band needs to be, how high the center sits, how the prongs or bezel hold the stone.

Start on our custom ring from photo page.

How the custom ring from a photo process works

Step What you send What you approve What you pay
1. Share the idea One or more photos, plus notes on what you love Nothing yet —
2. Choose the details Stone type, carat, metal, ring size The specification and the price Price is based on metal, stone and carat
3. Review the design Feedback and changes The design drawing before production —
4. Optional: hold it first Your ring size Shape, scale and fit on your hand $199 replica, credited on orders of $1,000+
5. Production Final go-ahead The finished ring, made to order in Los Angeles The ring price

The step that matters most is approval. Nothing is cast until you are happy with what you see, so a photo of someone else's ring becomes a ring that is unmistakably yours.

What to send with your photo

  • The clearest images you have. Several angles help: top view, side profile and on the hand if possible.
  • What you love about it. The halo? The band? The way the stone sits low? Tell us, so we keep the right details.
  • What you would change. Many clients love one ring's center and another ring's band.
  • Stone preference. Natural diamond, lab created diamond, Premium Moissanite or a colored stone such as ruby, emerald or tanzanite.
  • Metal. 14K or 18K white, yellow or rose gold, or platinum.
  • Ring size, or your best estimate. Our ring size guide explains how to measure.

How much does a custom engagement ring from a photo cost?

A custom ring is priced on the same drivers as our catalog rings: metal, stone type, carat and the complexity of the setting. The design itself does not change the math as much as the stone does. That is why the best way to estimate is to look at a similar design in our collection.

The spread inside a single design shows how much the stone choice matters: moissanite and lab created diamonds keep a large look affordable, while natural diamonds scale steeply with carat. Our custom engagement ring cost guide breaks this down in detail.

Try the ring in real life before it is made

A photo is flat. A ring is not. The height of the center stone, the width of the band and the size of a halo are all hard to judge on a screen. Our Try It In Real Life replica solves that: a $199 replica of any ring design in sizes 4 to 13, including half sizes. You keep the replica, and the full $199 is credited toward any order of $1,000 or more. The credit never expires.

For a proposal, that also means you can check the size discreetly. If the real ring still needs adjusting, resizing is free within 60 days.

What protects you after you approve

Custom does not mean you give up the protections of a catalog ring. Every Segal ring includes:

  • Lifetime warranty and lifetime upgrade
  • Free 60-day resizing and free engraving
  • Free worldwide shipping and 30-day returns
  • Conflict-free stones

Shop the look: designs clients often start from

A custom request can also begin as a small change to an existing design. These are good starting points; each product page photo switches to the exact metal and stone variant you choose.
