Lion Signet Rings: Styles, Sizing and How They're Made

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

A lion signet ring is a men's ring with a lion head carved in relief on a flat or domed face, usually cast in solid gold and often set with diamonds or colored stones. It suits men who want one meaningful statement piece. Fit it a little looser than a band, since the wide face sits snugger. Here is how to choose a style, get the size right and understand how the ring is made.

What is a lion signet ring?

Signet rings started as working tools. A carved face was pressed into hot wax to seal letters and documents, and the design stood for a family, a title or a promise. Today the wax is gone, but the meaning stayed. A signet is still the ring a man chooses to say something about himself.

The lion has been a symbol of courage, leadership and protection for thousands of years, from royal crests to family coats of arms. On a ring, it turns a classic signet into something more personal. It is also a strong design shape: a mane, a brow and a muzzle give the jeweler plenty of depth to carve, so the face catches light from every angle.

Our Royal Lion signet, the Terry design, is the center of our men's lion jewelry collection. It comes in several stone versions, so the same lion can look classic, dark or colorful.

Lion signet ring styles compared

The same lion face changes character depending on what is set into it. Here is how the versions compare.

Style Stones Look and feel Best for Price
Diamond (Terry No. 1) Natural diamonds Bright, classic, the most formal Everyday statement, evening wear from $9,408
Black diamond (Terry No. 7) Black diamonds Dark, low-key, modern Men who prefer subtle over sparkle from $6,969
Ruby (Terry No. 10) Rubies Warm red against gold, heraldic A personal or family piece from $7,392
Sapphire (Terry No. 13) Blue sapphires Cool blue, regal Pairing with white or blue watch dials from $7,392
22K sapphire (Terry No. 130) Blue sapphires in 22K gold Rich, deep yellow; heaviest gold content Collectors and heirloom buyers from $13,326

The stones also differ in durability. Diamond scores 10 on the Mohs scale, ruby and sapphire 9. All three are excellent for a ring worn every day, especially when the stones sit inside the carved metal rather than on top of it.

14K, 18K or 22K gold for a signet?

Gold karat tells you how much of the metal is pure gold: 14K is 58.3%, 18K is 75% and 22K is about 91.7%. The higher the karat, the deeper the yellow and the softer the metal.

  • 14K is the hardest of the three and holds crisp carving detail longest on a ring worn daily.
  • 18K has a richer yellow and a slightly heavier feel, a favorite for signets.
  • 22K is almost pure gold. It has the warmest color and the most heirloom character, and it will soften its edges gently over years of wear.

For most men, 14K or 18K is the sweet spot. Choose 22K if the ring is meant to be passed down and you like the idea of it aging with you.

How a lion signet ring is made

Every Segal ring is made to order in Los Angeles. A carved signet like the Royal Lion follows the classic jeweler's path from model to finished piece:

  • Design. The lion face is modeled in 3D so the depth of the mane and brow is exact before any gold is used.
  • Model. The design is printed as a precise wax or resin model at your ring size.
  • Casting. The model is encased in plaster-like investment, burned out, and molten gold is poured into the cavity it leaves. This is the lost-wax method jewelers have used for centuries.
  • Cleaning and detailing. The raw casting is cleaned, and the carved areas are refined by hand so the relief reads sharply.
  • Stone setting. Diamonds, rubies or sapphires are set into the face one by one.
  • Polishing. High-polish surfaces are brightened while recessed areas keep their depth, which is what makes the lion look three-dimensional.

Lion signet ring sizing: what to know

Signets fit differently from bands. A wide face covers more of the finger, so the same size number feels tighter. Most men are more comfortable going up a half size from their band size, especially on the ring finger. Pinky signets are more forgiving.

A few habits help: measure at the end of the day when fingers are largest, make sure the ring slides over the knuckle with light pressure, and check the fit in both warm and cold weather. Our ring size guide has a full size chart and home measuring methods.

Every ring includes free resizing within 60 days, but a signet's carved face makes it worth getting right the first time.

Try a lion signet before you buy

Weight, width and how bold the face looks on your hand are hard to judge from a screen. That is why we offer the Try It In Real Life replica: a $199 replica of any ring design, in sizes 4 to 13 including half sizes. You keep the replica, and the full $199 is credited toward any order of $1,000 or more. The credit never expires.

On the product page, the main photo also switches to the exact metal and stone variant you select, so you see the version you are buying before checkout.

Frequently asked questions

What does a lion signet ring symbolize? Courage, leadership and protection. Lions have appeared on royal crests and family arms for centuries, and a lion signet carries that meaning in a personal piece.

Which finger should I wear a lion signet ring on? Traditionally the pinky of the non-dominant hand. The ring finger and index finger also work; just size for the wider face.

Should I size up for a signet ring? Often by a half size, because the wide face sits tighter than a band. The $199 replica lets you confirm the fit before ordering in gold.

Is 22K gold too soft for a ring? 22K is softer than 14K or 18K and will show wear sooner, but many men choose it for its color and heirloom feel. For hard daily use, 14K or 18K holds detail longer.

Can I see the exact version before ordering? Yes. The product photo switches to the exact metal and stone you choose, and the Try It In Real Life replica shows you the real size and shape on your hand.
