Marquise Engagement Rings: Proportions, Halo or Solitaire, and Price

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

A well-proportioned marquise engagement ring has a length-to-width ratio between about 1.75 and 2.25, with 2.0 the classic sweet spot. Protect the two pointed tips with V-prongs, a bezel or a halo, and expect a marquise to look larger than a round of the same carat: a 1 carat marquise on our product pages measures 11 x 5 mm.

What is a marquise cut engagement ring?

A marquise is a long, boat-shaped brilliant cut with two pointed ends. It has the same faceting style as a round brilliant, so it sparkles well, but its elongated outline spreads the carat weight across more surface. That is why marquise cut engagement rings look big for their weight and make fingers look longer and slimmer.

The shape has a long history in jewelry and swings in and out of fashion. Today it is back for couples who want something classic but less expected than a round or oval, and it pairs beautifully with vintage, art deco and modern minimalist settings alike.

Marquise sizes by carat: our stone-size chart

These measurements come from the stone-size options on our product pages. The ratio column is length divided by width.

Carat Size (length x width) Length-to-width ratio
0.5 ct 8 x 4 mm 2.00
1 ct 11 x 5 mm 2.20
1.5 ct 12 x 6 mm 2.00
2 ct 13 x 6.5 mm 2.00
2.5 ct 14 x 7.5 mm 1.87
3 ct 15 x 7 mm 2.14
4 ct 17 x 8.5 mm 2.00

Two things stand out. First, a marquise is long: a 1 carat stone is 11 mm end to end, which is longer than the 6.5 mm face of a 1 carat round on our size chart. Second, most of our marquise sizes land right around a 2.0 ratio, the proportion most people picture when they think of the shape.

Length-to-width ratio: how the marquise shape changes

Ratio Look on the hand Who it suits
1.75 Shorter and fuller, closer to an oval Shorter fingers, wearers who want a softer shape
2.00 Classic marquise proportion Most hands; the safest choice
2.10–2.25 Slender and dramatic, longest finger coverage Longer fingers, statement and vintage looks
Above 2.25 Very narrow; can look thin Rarely recommended for a center stone

Beyond ratio, look for symmetry. The two halves should mirror each other, the points should line up on a straight axis, and the "wings" on each side should curve evenly. A marquise with uneven shoulders looks lopsided on the hand even when the carat weight is correct.

Most marquise stones also show a "bow tie," a darker band across the center where light leaks out. A mild bow tie is normal and adds contrast. A strong one makes the middle look dull. When you choose a moissanite, lab-created or natural diamond option on our pages, the main photo switches to the exact stone and metal you select, which helps you judge the face-up look.

Marquise halo or solitaire: protecting the points

The two tips are the most fragile part of any marquise. A sharp knock directly on a point can chip it. The setting is your protection.

Setting Point protection Look Best for
Solitaire with V-prongs High: metal V caps cover each tip Clean, shows the full outline Classic, minimalist taste
Halo High: a ring of small stones surrounds the tips Bigger face-up size and extra sparkle Maximum presence
Hidden halo Medium to high: stones under the center support the base Solitaire look from above, sparkle from the side Subtle detail lovers
Bezel Highest: metal rim around the entire edge Modern and smooth Active hands, daily wear
East-west Depends on prongs Stone set sideways across the finger Modern, unexpected look

Our Journey designs place a hidden halo of small stones under the marquise center, so it reads as a solitaire from above and sparkles from the side. If you lean toward a hidden halo, our hidden halo vs double halo guide explains the difference in sparkle.

Marquise engagement ring price

Price depends on stone type, carat and metal. A few examples from our marquise designs:

  • Miriam No. 37, a marquise black diamond pavé ring with a hidden stone: from $2,906.
  • Journey No. 39, hidden halo marquise black diamond: from $6,840, up to $12,190 depending on options.
  • Journey No. 56, hidden halo marquise ruby: from $6,800.
  • Journey No. 403, hidden halo marquise aquamarine: from $7,693.

Because a marquise looks larger per carat than most shapes, many buyers choose a slightly smaller stone and put the savings toward a better metal or a halo. For a broader view of black stones in this shape, see our black diamond engagement rings guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best length-to-width ratio for a marquise? Between about 1.75 and 2.25, with 2.0 the classic proportion. Most of the marquise sizes on our product pages sit close to 2.0.

How big is a 1 carat marquise? On our product pages, a 1 carat marquise measures 11 x 5 mm. A 2 carat marquise measures 13 x 6.5 mm.

Do marquise diamonds chip easily? The pointed tips are the weak spots. V-prongs, a halo or a bezel protect them for everyday wear.

Does a marquise look bigger than a round diamond? Yes. Its long outline spreads the weight over more surface: a 1 carat marquise is 11 mm long, while a 1 carat round on our chart is 6.5 mm across.

What wedding band goes with a marquise engagement ring? A contoured or V-shaped band wraps around the marquise so the two rings sit flush. A matching bridal set band is the simplest option.
