Three Stone Engagement Rings: Meaning, Stone Pairings and Price

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

A three stone engagement ring sets a center stone between two side stones, a design often read as your past, present and future together. You can match all three stones or pair a colored center with diamond sides. Our three stone designs include Luna No. 52 from $2,607 and Valentina No. 58 from $2,611. Here is how to choose the pairing and the proportions.

What does a three stone engagement ring mean?

The most common reading is time. The left stone stands for your past, the center for the present, and the right for the future you are building.

Some couples give the three stones their own meaning instead: two people and the bond between them, or a family of three.

That flexibility is part of the appeal. The ring tells a story, and you decide what the story is.

How is a three stone ring different from a solitaire?

A solitaire puts all the attention on one stone. A three stone ring spreads the sparkle across the top of the finger and covers more of it.

Side stones also frame the center. Even when they are small, they make the middle stone look more defined.

And because the total weight is shared across three stones, you can get a wide, full look without one very large center.

Which stone pairings work best?

There are two main approaches: matching stones for a classic, even look, or contrasting stones for color and meaning. Both work well.

Center stone Side stones Look Mohs hardness (center)
Diamond Diamond Classic, maximum sparkle 10
Blue sapphire Diamond Rich color with a bright frame 9
Ruby Diamond Warm and romantic 9
Emerald Diamond Vintage green; needs a protective setting 7.5–8
Black diamond Geometric side stones Modern and graphic 10
Moissanite Moissanite Big sparkle at a lower cost 9.25

Diamond, sapphire, ruby and moissanite all handle daily wear well. Emerald is softer, so it suits a careful wearer or a setting that protects the edges.

How big should the side stones be?

Side stones are usually smaller than the center so the middle stays the focus. Matching all three in size gives a bolder, more even line.

  • For a classic look, keep the sides clearly smaller than the center.
  • For a modern look, choose shaped sides like triangles or tapered stones.
  • For a vintage look, add milgrain or micro pavé around the stones.
  • For balance on a small hand, keep the total width modest.

On our product pages, a 1 carat round center measures 6.5 mm across and a 1.5 carat round measures 7.3 mm. Use those sizes to picture how wide the full row of stones will sit.

How do you care for a three stone ring?

Three stones mean more edges and prongs than a solitaire. Look at the setting every few months and bring the ring in if a stone feels loose.

Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, working gently between the stones where lotion collects.

Remove it for heavy gym work or gardening. Every ring comes with our lifetime warranty, and regular checks keep it looking its best.
