Yellow Diamond Engagement Rings: Canary Color, Cuts and Price

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

A canary diamond engagement ring features a vivid yellow diamond as its center stone. "Canary" is the trade name for a strong, saturated yellow. It is still a diamond, rated 10 on the Mohs scale, so it is as durable as a white diamond. Our Reese No. 1015 yellow diamond design starts from $4,496. Here is how to choose the color, cut and metal.

What is a canary diamond?

A canary diamond is a diamond with a bright, pure yellow color. In most yellow diamonds, the color comes from traces of nitrogen in the crystal.

Labs grade fancy color diamonds by how strong the color is. Common grades run from Fancy Light to Fancy, Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid.

"Canary" usually describes the stronger end of that range, where the yellow is rich and unmistakable. Paler stones read as soft lemon or straw.

Yellow vs brown vs black diamond: which fancy color?

Yellow is one of three popular fancy color diamonds for engagement rings. All three are diamonds, so all three rate 10 on the Mohs scale.

Fancy color Look on the hand Starting price examples on our site
Yellow (canary) Bright, sunny and eye-catching Reese No. 1015 from $4,496; Lotus no. 1003 from $4,922; Harmony No. 1003 from $5,687

Black Dark, dramatic and modern; natural, color-enhanced Janet No. 5 pear halo, $2,195 to $6,957 across black moissanite and natural black diamond options

On the same Lotus and Harmony designs, our yellow diamond versions start higher than the brown diamond versions. The final price depends on carat, metal and setting.

Which metal makes a yellow diamond look best?

The metal around a yellow diamond changes how its color reads. This is the biggest styling decision after the stone itself.

Metal Effect on the yellow Best for
Yellow gold Reflects warmth into the stone; the yellow looks deeper and richer Maximizing color in a lighter stone
White gold High contrast; the yellow pops against the white metal A crisp, modern look
Platinum Cool, bright contrast like white gold, with a heavier feel Contrast plus a substantial ring
Rose gold Soft, warm blend; the stone looks gentle and romantic Vintage and floral designs

If your stone is a paler yellow, yellow gold helps it look more saturated. If it is already a strong canary, white gold or platinum lets it stand out.

Which cut is best for a yellow diamond?

Cut affects how strong the yellow looks face up. Brilliant-style cuts can concentrate color, while step cuts show a calmer, clearer tone.

  • Radiant and princess: brilliant faceting and corners that tend to intensify yellow.
  • Marquise: a long shape that looks large for its weight.
  • Emerald cut: long step facets for an elegant, architectural look.
  • Round: maximum sparkle with a classic outline.

What size is an emerald cut yellow diamond ring?

Considering an emerald cut yellow diamond ring? Size is usually the first question. These are the emerald cut sizes on our product pages:

  • 1 carat: 7 x 5 mm
  • 1.5 carats: 7.6 x 5.6 mm
  • 2 carats: 8.5 x 6.5 mm
