1 Carat vs 1.5 Carat: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
Posted by YANIV SEGAL

On our product pages a 1 carat round measures 6.5 mm across and a 1.5 carat measures 7.3 mm. That 0.8 mm adds about 26% more visible face for 50% more weight. The upgrade is most worth it in elongated shapes, and when a lab diamond or moissanite keeps the price gap small. Here is how the two sizes compare in every popular cut, on real fingers, and across stone types.

1 carat vs 1.5 carat: how much bigger does it look?
Carat measures weight, and weight is spread across depth as well as the face. So a stone that is 50% heavier is not 50% wider. The table below uses the stone-size charts on our product pages and compares the face area (length x width) of each cut at both weights.
| Cut | 1 carat | 1.5 carat | Visible face gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round | 6.5 mm | 7.3 mm | about +26% |
| Heart | 6.5 mm | 7.3 mm | about +26% |
| Emerald / radiant | 7 x 5 mm | 7.6 x 5.6 mm | about +22% |
| Pear | 9 x 5.4 mm | 10.3 x 6.2 mm | about +31% |
| Marquise | 11 x 5 mm | 12 x 6 mm | about +31% |
The pattern is clear: elongated shapes reward the upgrade most. A 1.5 carat pear gains 1.3 mm in length and nearly 1 mm in width over a 1 carat, which you notice from across a room. A step-cut emerald gains the least, because more of its weight sits below the surface.
A 1.5 carat engagement ring on the hand
Finger width sets the scale. On a size 6 finger (16.5 mm inside diameter), a 1 carat round covers about 39% of the width and a 1.5 carat about 44%. On a size 4 finger (14.9 mm) those numbers become 44% and 49%, so the 1.5 carat starts to read as a large stone. On a size 8 finger (18.2 mm) they drop to 36% and 40%, and many people find the 1 carat looks smaller than they expected.
A useful rule of thumb: if your ring size is 7 or above, the 1.5 carat is the size most people picture when they imagine a 1 carat. If your ring size is 5 or below, a well-cut 1 carat already looks generous.
Stone type changes the math
The question "is the upgrade worth it" depends on what each extra half carat costs, and that depends on the stone. Our product pages list options such as Natural Diamonds, Lab created Diamond and Premium Moissanite, and the price updates the moment you change carat or stone. For a sense of range, our Minimalist Emerald Cut Isla No. 1 runs from $1,620 to $212,273 across its options, from a small moissanite to a 4.5 carat natural diamond.
| Stone | Mohs hardness | Cost of going from 1 to 1.5 ct | Is the upgrade worth it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural diamond | 10 | The steepest jump; natural diamond prices climb faster than weight | Worth it if size matters more than other upgrades |
| Lab created diamond | 10 | A much smaller step in dollars | Usually yes: same hardness and sparkle, bigger look |
| Premium moissanite | 9.25 | The smallest step | Almost always; the extra size costs little |
| Black diamond / black moissanite | 10 / 9.25 | Moderate | Yes for bold, modern designs |
The practical test: open one design, select 1 carat, note the price, then select 1.5 carat in the same metal and stone. That single difference is your real upgrade cost.
When 1 carat is the better choice
Stay at 1 carat when you want a natural diamond and would rather spend on a halo, platinum or a matching band. A halo adds a ring of small diamonds around the center and can make a 1 carat face up closer to the spread of a 1.5 carat solitaire. A 1 carat is also the sweet spot for petite fingers, for low-profile settings that sit flush with a wedding band, and for anyone who works with their hands.

When the 1.5 carat upgrade is worth it
Move up to 1.5 carats when you are choosing a pear, marquise or oval-style silhouette, when your ring size is 7 or larger, or when you are choosing lab diamond or moissanite and the price step is modest. It is also the better choice for a solitaire with no halo, because the center stone carries the whole look alone.
One more consideration: our lifetime upgrade policy means a 1 carat today does not lock you in. You can start at 1 carat and upgrade the center later, for an anniversary or any milestone. If you are thinking even bigger, see our guide to 3 carat engagement rings or the size breakdown in how big a 2 carat ring is.

Frequently asked questions
What is the mm difference between a 1 carat and a 1.5 carat diamond? On our product pages, a round 1 carat measures 6.5 mm and a 1.5 carat 7.3 mm, a 0.8 mm difference in diameter and about 26% more face area.
Can people tell the difference between 1 and 1.5 carats? Side by side, yes, especially in pear and marquise shapes, which gain about 31% in face area. On its own, a well-cut 1 carat with a halo can look close to a 1.5 carat solitaire.
Is a 1.5 carat engagement ring too big? Rarely. It covers about 44% of the width of a size 6 finger. On a size 4 it approaches half the finger width and reads as a statement ring.
Is the price jump from 1 to 1.5 carats the same for every stone? No. Natural diamonds have the steepest jump. Lab created diamond and moissanite make the half-carat step much smaller. Select both sizes on the same design to see your exact difference.
Can I start with 1 carat and upgrade later? Yes. Every ring includes our lifetime upgrade, so you can move to a larger center stone later.
