How Big Is a 2 Carat Ring? mm Sizes for Every Cut
Posted by YANIV SEGAL

A 2 carat round diamond measures about 8 mm across, roughly half the width of an average finger. Elongated cuts look bigger: on our product pages a 2 carat emerald or radiant is 8.5 x 6.5 mm, a pear 11.4 x 6.9 mm and a marquise 13 x 6.5 mm. Colored stones of the same weight differ in size because of density, which we cover below.

How big is a 2 carat ring?
Carat is weight, not size. One carat equals 0.2 grams, so a 2 carat stone weighs 0.4 grams. How large that weight looks depends on the cut: shapes that spread the weight over a long, shallow outline look bigger than shapes that hold weight in depth.
The measurements below come from the stone-size options on our product pages. When you select a carat weight on a Segal ring, these are the face sizes we work to.
2 carat ring size in mm by cut
| Cut | 2 carat size on our product pages | How it reads on the hand |
|---|---|---|
| Round | 8 mm diameter | Classic; about half the width of a size 6 finger |
| Heart | 8 mm face | Same face size as round; the outline needs this size to read clearly |
| Emerald cut | 8.5 x 6.5 mm | Long and clean; step facets show clarity |
| Radiant | 8.5 x 6.5 mm | Same outline as emerald cut, with brilliant sparkle |
| Pear | 11.4 x 6.9 mm | Long; elongates the finger |
| Marquise | 13 x 6.5 mm | The longest outline; looks largest per carat |
Measurements are face sizes for the stone itself. The finished ring looks larger once you add prongs, a halo or a bezel. A halo, for example, can add a full ring of small stones around the outline.
How does 2 carats compare with 1, 1.5 and 3 carats?
Carat weight grows faster than face size. Doubling the weight does not double the diameter. Using the round size chart from our product pages:
| Carat | Round face size | Change vs 1 carat |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ct | 6.5 mm | Baseline |
| 1.5 ct | 7.3 mm | +0.8 mm |
| 2 ct | 8 mm | +1.5 mm |
| 2.5 ct | 8.7 mm | +2.2 mm |
| 3 ct | 9.1 mm | +2.6 mm |
So a 2 carat round is twice the weight of a 1 carat, but only 1.5 mm wider. That is still a clear visual step: the face area grows from about 33 to about 50 square millimeters, roughly half again as much surface. If you are weighing smaller steps, our guide 1 carat vs 1.5 carat breaks down that upgrade, and 3 carat engagement rings covers the next jump.
How big does 2 carats look on your finger?
Finger width changes the impression. US ring size 6 has an inside diameter of 16.5 mm, so an 8 mm round covers just under half the finger. On a size 4 (14.9 mm) the same stone covers more than half and looks larger. On a size 9 (19.0 mm) it covers about 42 percent and reads more modest. This is why the same 2 carat ring looks different on different hands. Our ring size guide lists inside diameters for every size.

Colored stones: why 2 carats is not always the same size
Different gems have different densities. A denser stone packs the same weight into a smaller volume, so it looks smaller at the same carat:
- Ruby and sapphire are denser than diamond, so a 2 carat ruby is slightly smaller than a 2 carat diamond of the same cut.
- Moissanite is lighter than diamond, so a moissanite of the same mm size weighs less.
- Emerald, morganite and tanzanite also differ from diamond, and colored stones are often cut deeper or shallower for color.
The practical takeaway: when comparing stones, compare millimeters, not only carats. On our product pages the carat options are shown alongside mm sizes, so you can choose by the face size you want to see. The main photo also switches to the exact metal and stone variant you select. For ruby lovers, our Sydney 2ct designs are built around a 2 carat center, starting from $3,705.
Checklist: choosing your 2 carat ring
- Decide the look first: round for classic, pear or marquise for maximum length.
- Compare mm sizes, not only carat weight, especially across stone types.
- Consider your ring size: smaller fingers make 2 carats look bigger.
- Remember a halo or bezel adds visible size beyond the stone itself.
- Pick the stone: Premium Moissanite, lab created diamond or natural diamond.

Frequently asked questions
How many mm is a 2 carat round diamond? On our product pages a 2 carat round measures 8 mm across. A 1 carat round measures 6.5 mm.
Which cut makes a 2 carat ring look biggest? Elongated cuts. On our size chart a 2 carat marquise is 13 x 6.5 mm and a 2 carat pear is 11.4 x 6.9 mm, both longer than an 8 mm round.
Is a 2 carat ring too big for small fingers? Not necessarily, but it looks larger. On a size 4 finger an 8 mm round covers more than half the width; many people love that look.
Is a 2 carat ruby the same size as a 2 carat diamond? No. Ruby is denser than diamond, so a 2 carat ruby is slightly smaller. Compare millimeter sizes when choosing.
How big is a 2 carat emerald cut? On our product pages a 2 carat emerald cut, like a 2 carat radiant, measures 8.5 x 6.5 mm.
