Black Diamond Ring Prices in 2026: What 1, 2 and 3 Carats Cost

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

At Segal Jewelry, our Janet No. 5 black diamond pear halo starts from $2,195, and larger natural black stones in other designs climb past $12,000. What you pay depends on three things: natural black diamond or black moissanite, carat weight, and the gold or platinum setting around it. Below, we break down each factor with real prices from our own product pages.

The Pear Shaped Halo Diamond Ring – Janet No. 5, from $2,195. Available with a natural black diamond or black moissanite center.

How much does a black diamond ring cost?

Black diamond ring prices are lower than white diamond prices at the same size, often by a wide margin. In our own catalog, the same Janet No. 5 pear halo runs from $2,195 to $6,957 depending on the stone you pick and its size. Compare that with our Minimalist Emerald Cut Isla No. 1, where the spread runs from $1,620 with moissanite up to $212,273 for a 4.5 carat natural white diamond. Black stones simply do not climb the same steep curve.

The reason is grading. A white diamond is priced on color, clarity, cut and carat, and the top of each scale commands a premium. A black diamond is opaque, so clarity grading does not apply in the same way, and the color is uniform black rather than a scale from D to Z. That removes most of the rarity premium and leaves carat weight and quality of the black color as the main drivers.

What 1, 2 and 3 carat black diamonds look like on the hand

Price per carat tells only half the story. The other half is how big the stone looks. Because black diamonds do not throw back white light, they read as a solid, graphic shape on the finger, so a 2 carat black stone often looks bolder than a white one of the same weight. Here are the face sizes we list on our product pages for round, heart and pear cuts:

Carat Round / heart face Pear face Price effect
1 ct 6.5 mm 9 x 5.4 mm Entry point for most designs
2 ct 8 mm 11.4 x 6.9 mm The sweet spot: big look, moderate step up
3 ct 9.1 mm 13.1 x 7.9 mm Statement size; natural stones rise faster
4 ct 10.2 mm 14.4 x 8.6 mm Top of our size options

Notice the jump from 1 to 2 carats adds 1.5 mm of width to a round stone, while 2 to 3 adds only 1.1 mm. If you are weighing size against cost, 2 carats gives the biggest visible gain per step. For a deeper dive on dimensions, see our guide How Big Is a 2 Carat Ring?

Natural black diamond vs black moissanite: which fits your budget?

On many of our black styles, the product page lets you choose between "Natural Black Diamond" and "Black Moissanite." Both are hard enough for everyday wear: diamond sits at 10 on the Mohs scale, moissanite at 9.25. The difference is what you are paying for.

  • Choose natural black diamond if the word "diamond" matters to you, if this is an heirloom piece, or if you want the deep, slightly velvety matte-to-satin luster natural black stones have.
  • Choose black moissanite if you want the largest possible center for the money. Moissanite has more fire, so a black moissanite shows a subtle glint under light.
  • Either way, the photo on the product page switches to the exact metal and stone variant you select, so you see the version you are buying before checkout.

Why is a black diamond cheaper than a white diamond?

Three factors keep black diamond engagement ring prices down:

  • No clarity premium. A black diamond's color comes from dense mineral inclusions. In a white diamond those inclusions would lower the grade; here they create the color itself.
  • Uniform color. There is no D-to-Z ladder, so there is no top-of-scale rarity premium.
  • Demand. White diamonds still dominate bridal demand, which keeps their prices high at every size.

What still raises the price: carat weight, how even and saturated the black color is, the metal (18K and platinum cost more than 14K), and the setting. A halo or pavé band adds small white or black diamonds, and each of those adds labor and material.

Does metal choice change the price?

Yes. Most of our black diamond rings come in 14K and 18K white, yellow and rose gold, and many styles are also available in platinum. 14K is the most affordable and the most scratch resistant gold option. 18K has a richer color and a higher gold content, and platinum is the heaviest and most expensive. Black stones look especially sharp against white gold and platinum, and warm and soft against rose gold. Our rose gold and black diamond pairing guide covers the metal question in detail.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 1 carat black diamond ring? At Segal Jewelry, our Janet No. 5 pear halo starts from $2,195. The final price for a 1 carat stone depends on whether you choose a natural black diamond or black moissanite and on your metal.

How much does a 2 carat black diamond ring cost? A 2 carat black stone costs more than a 1 carat but far less than a 2 carat white diamond. Select 2 ct on the product page and the price updates instantly; our Janet No. 5 tops out at $6,957 across all its options.

Are black diamonds worth the money? They are worth it if you love the look. You get a hard, durable stone (10 on the Mohs scale) and a bold appearance for a fraction of the cost of a white diamond of the same size.

Is black moissanite cheaper than black diamond? Generally yes. Black moissanite lets you go larger for the same budget, and it is still very hard at 9.25 on the Mohs scale.

Can I see the ring before buying? Yes. Our $199 replica lets you wear the design at home, and the full $199 is credited on orders of $1,000 or more. You can also book an appointment at our Los Angeles or New York showroom.
