Black vs White Diamond Engagement Rings: Durability, Price, Look
Posted by YANIV SEGAL

Black and white diamonds are equally hard, both 10 on the Mohs scale, so the real differences are look, price and grading. White diamonds sparkle and cost more; black diamonds are opaque, graphic and far less expensive at the same size. Choose white for classic brilliance, black for a bold statement and more carat per dollar. Here is the full comparison.

Black vs white diamond engagement rings: the side-by-side
We make many of our designs in both colors, so we see the trade-offs every day. Here they are in one table.
| Factor | Black diamond | White diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Hardness | 10 Mohs | 10 Mohs |
| Toughness | Dense inclusions can make it more prone to chipping on a hard knock; protective settings help | Fewer inclusions; tough, though still able to chip at thin edges |
| Sparkle | Glossy surface luster, no internal fire | Brilliance and fire; the classic sparkle |
| Price at the same carat | Much lower | Much higher, rising steeply with color and clarity |
| Grading | Judged mainly on evenness of color and luster | Full 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, carat |
| Care | Warm soapy water, soft brush; shows dust less | Warm soapy water, soft brush; loses sparkle when oily |
| Look on the hand | Graphic, bold, reads larger | Bright, classic, catches light across a room |
Are black diamonds as durable as white diamonds?
For scratch resistance, yes. Both score 10, the top of the Mohs scale, so nothing you meet in daily life will scratch either stone. Toughness, meaning resistance to chipping, is a separate property. Black diamonds get their color from dense mineral inclusions, and those inclusions can make a stone more vulnerable to a sharp blow. The practical answer is the setting: a halo, bezel or hidden halo shields the edges. Our pear halo Janet designs and the Sawyer No. 9 emerald cut both protect the center well.
Black vs white diamond price
This is where the two colors split apart. A white diamond's price climbs with every step up in color and clarity, and the jump accelerates at larger sizes. Black diamonds do not carry those premiums. At Segal, our black pear halo Janet No. 5 starts from $2,195, while our white Heart Shape Diamond Ring – Noelle No. 3 starts from $5,400, and white center stones in larger carats go much higher. On our Isla No. 1 solitaire, choices range from $1,620 with moissanite to $212,273 for a 4.5 carat natural diamond.
If your goal is size within a budget, black gives you the most visible stone for the money. For carat-by-carat details, see Black Diamond Ring Prices in 2026.

How do black and white diamonds look on the hand?
A white diamond's beauty is light: it pulls light in and throws it back as sparkle. It looks brightest in sunshine and candlelight and fades a little in flat office lighting. A black diamond's beauty is shape. It looks the same in every light, a crisp silhouette with a polished surface. Because it does not blend into the metal, a black stone often reads as slightly larger than a white one of the same carat weight.
Metal makes a big difference. Black diamonds look sharpest in white gold and platinum, warm and romantic in rose gold, and bold in yellow gold. Read our rose gold and black diamond guide for metal pairing.
Black engagement rings for her: who should choose which?
- Choose black if she prefers modern, minimal or vintage-gothic style, wears black and silver tones, wants a larger look for the budget, or wants a ring nobody else has.
- Choose white if she has always pictured a classic sparkling solitaire, loves light and fire, or wants the broadest long-term appeal.
- Choose both if you cannot decide: a black center with a white diamond halo or band gives you contrast and sparkle in one ring.
- Consider black moissanite if you want the black look at an even lower price; it is 9.25 on the Mohs scale. See our black moissanite guide.

Frequently asked questions
Are black diamonds real diamonds? Yes. Natural black diamonds are carbon, like white diamonds, with dense inclusions that create the black color. They score 10 on the Mohs scale.
Is a black diamond cheaper than a white diamond? Yes, at the same carat weight. Black diamonds do not carry the color and clarity premiums that drive white diamond prices.
Do black diamonds scratch or chip easily? They do not scratch in normal wear. Because of their inclusions, a hard knock can chip a black diamond more easily than a white one, so we recommend a protective halo or bezel setting.
What are black engagement rings for her called? Most are black diamond engagement rings; you will also see black moissanite rings, which offer a similar look at a lower price.
