Custom Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald Engagement Rings From a Photo
Posted by YANIV SEGAL

To get a custom ruby, sapphire or emerald engagement ring, send us a photo of the design you love with your ring size and budget. We rebuild it in 3D for your approval, you choose the gemstone and metal, and we handcraft it in Los Angeles, using a protective setting suited to that stone. Color changes everything about a ring, so the setting matters as much as the stone.

Can you make a custom gemstone engagement ring from a photo?
Yes. A screenshot, a family photo or a sketch is enough to start, and you can swap the stone in the photo for the gem you want.
That is often how gemstone rings begin. Someone loves a diamond design but wants it with a ruby, a blue sapphire or an emerald center.
You work directly with me, Yaniv Segal, and our design team. We make original pieces inspired by your photo; we do not copy branded designer merchandise.
How does the custom process work?
- Send a photo or sketch, plus your ring size, budget and date if you know them.
- Our designers rebuild the ring in 3D and send a design preview to approve, with changes until it's right.
- Choose your gemstone and metal: 14K or 18K yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum.
- Optional: order the $199 Try It In Real Life 3D-printed replica.
- We handcraft the ring to order in our Los Angeles workshop with conflict-free stones.
Tell us your date when you send the photo, and we'll confirm the timeline before you order. A quote costs nothing.
Send us your photoRuby vs sapphire vs emerald: which gem suits your ring?
The three classic colored stones wear very differently. Hardness on the Mohs scale is the quickest guide to how much protection each one needs.
| Gem | Mohs hardness | Natural or lab-created | Best setting | Segal example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ruby | 9 | Lab-created Ruby or Natural Ruby on many designs | Prongs, halo or bezel | Noelle No. 57, from $3,219 |
| Blue sapphire | 9 | Options shown on each product page | Prongs, halo or three stone | Valentina No. 58, from $2,611 |
| Emerald | 7.5–8 | Lab-created or natural | Bezel, halo or protected corners | Vanessa No. 6, from $7,872 |
Ruby and sapphire are both corundum, so they share a hardness of 9. That makes them excellent for daily wear in almost any setting.
Emerald is softer and often contains natural inclusions. A protective setting and a little care keep it looking its best.
Custom ruby engagement rings
Ruby gives a deep red center with strong presence. It works in heart, oval, cushion and round shapes, and pairs warmly with yellow or rose gold.
On many of our ruby designs you can choose Lab-created Ruby or Natural Ruby. The main photo switches to the exact stone and metal you select.

Custom sapphire engagement rings
Blue sapphire is the classic choice for a colored engagement ring. Its hardness of 9 means it handles prongs and thin bands well.
Sapphire looks crisp in white gold or platinum and rich in yellow gold. Three stone designs, with diamonds on each side, are a timeless pairing.

Custom emerald engagement rings
Emerald brings a green no other gem matches. At 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, it benefits from a setting that guards the edges and corners.
- Choose a bezel or halo to shield the girdle.
- Pick the emerald cut, whose cut corners reduce chipping.
- Remove the ring for heavy work and harsh cleaners.
- Clean with warm water and a soft brush.

Which setting protects a colored stone best?
| Setting | Protection | Best gems |
|---|---|---|
| Four or six prongs | Good; shows the most color | Ruby, sapphire |
| Halo or hidden halo | High; frames and buffers the center | All three |
| Bezel | Highest; metal rim around the edge | Emerald, active hands |
| Three stone | Good; side stones add a buffer | Sapphire, ruby |
Our bezel-set engagement rings guide explains why bezels suit softer stones.

Frequently asked questions
Is a ruby or sapphire durable enough for an engagement ring? Yes. Both rate 9 on the Mohs scale, just under diamond, so they handle daily wear well.
Is emerald too soft for an engagement ring? No, but it needs more care. At 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale, it is best in a bezel, halo or emerald cut with protected corners.
Can I swap the diamond in a photo for a ruby, sapphire or emerald? Yes. Send the photo, tell us the gem you want, and we rebuild the design in 3D for your approval.
Do you offer lab-created gemstones? Many of our ruby designs offer Lab-created Ruby or Natural Ruby. Ask about options for your design when you request a quote.
