Square Diamond Rings: Princess vs Cushion vs Radiant
Posted by YANIV SEGAL

There are three main square diamond cuts. Princess has sharp 90-degree corners and crisp, bright sparkle. Cushion has rounded corners and soft, broad flashes of light. Radiant has trimmed corners and combines brilliance with a sturdier outline. Pick princess for modern edge, cushion for vintage romance, radiant for sparkle with fewer worries about chipping.

What counts as a square diamond ring?
A square diamond ring is any ring whose center stone has a square or near-square outline. Three cuts cover almost every square ring you will see: princess, cushion and square radiant. Asscher cuts are also square, but they are step cut, like a square emerald cut, so they belong to a different family with a hall-of-mirrors look rather than sparkle.
All three main cuts can also be cut slightly rectangular. If you specifically want a square, look for a length-to-width ratio close to 1.00, and up to about 1.05 still reads as square on the hand.
Princess vs cushion vs radiant: comparison table
| Feature | Princess | Cushion | Radiant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corners | Sharp, pointed 90-degree | Rounded, pillow-like | Trimmed (cut) corners |
| Sparkle style | Bright, crisp, many small flashes | Broad, softer flashes of fire | Very lively, brilliant faceting |
| Corner durability | Most exposed: protect corners | Excellent: no points | Very good: no sharp points |
| Look per carat | Slightly smaller face-up than its weight suggests | Similar to princess; softer edge | Looks a bit larger thanks to brilliant faceting and spread |
| Era and mood | Modern, clean, geometric | Vintage, romantic | Modern-glam, art deco hybrid |
| Best setting | V-prongs or bezel on corners, halo | Four or six prongs, vintage halo | Prongs or halo; hides little |
| Best for | Minimalists, modern taste | Antique and vintage lovers | Sparkle lovers who want durability |
Princess cut: crisp and modern
The princess is the most popular square cut and the most geometric. Its pyramid-shaped pavilion gives it bright, chopped sparkle, and its sharp corners give a clean, architectural outline. The trade-off is those corners: they are the thinnest part of the stone, so a hard knock can chip them. Set a princess with V-prongs or a protective halo. A floating halo, as on Candice No. 39, or a hidden halo, as on Daria No. 707, both add sparkle around the corners. For gemstone versions, princess cuts in blue topaz and peridot add color while keeping the modern lines.
Cushion cut: soft and vintage
A cushion cut has curved sides and rounded corners, like a pillow. It returns light in larger, slower flashes than a princess, which gives it a warm, candlelit look that pairs naturally with filigree, milgrain and vintage halos. With no sharp points, it is the most forgiving square shape for everyday wear. Elaina No. 45 shows how well a cushion sapphire fits a vintage filigree setting. Our guide to antique-style engagement rings explores that look further.

Radiant cut: brilliance with trimmed corners
The radiant combines the outline of an emerald cut with the faceting of a brilliant. Its corners are trimmed, so there are no sharp points to protect, yet it sparkles almost as much as a round. Radiants are often cut rectangular. On our product pages, radiant and emerald cut stones share one size chart, built around rectangular proportions: 1 carat is 7 x 5 mm and 2 carats is 8.5 x 6.5 mm. If you want a true square radiant, contact us before ordering, or start from a photo through our custom ring from a photo service. Which square cut suits whom?
- You love clean, modern design: princess, ideally with a bezel or protected corners.
- You love vintage and soft light: cushion in a halo or filigree setting.
- You want the most sparkle with fewer worries: radiant.
- You work with your hands: cushion or radiant, since neither has sharp corners.
- You want a dark, graphic square: any of the three in black diamond or black moissanite. Our black moissanite guide compares the budget option.
