What Is a CAD Ring Design? The 3D Preview Explained

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

A CAD ring design is a precise 3D computer model of your ring, built before any metal is cast. It shows the stone shape, setting height, prongs and band from every angle, so you can approve or change the design first. With us, you can then wear a 3D-printed replica of it. Here is how to read one.

What is CAD in jewelry?

CAD stands for computer-aided design. In jewelry, it is the digital model a ring is made from, with every measurement set: stone size, prong placement, band width and setting height.

Before CAD, rings were often carved by hand in wax. Today, most custom work starts on screen, because the model can be adjusted, measured and approved before production.

When we turn your photo or sketch into a ring, this model is the design preview you see.

CAD render, wax model or 3D-printed replica: what is the difference?

Stage What it is What it shows What it can't show
CAD render A digital 3D model viewed on screen Shape, proportions, setting height, details from any angle True size on your hand, weight, real sparkle
Wax model A physical model used in casting The shape in three dimensions Metal color, stone sparkle; it is usually part of production
3D-printed replica A wearable printed copy of the approved design Real scale on your finger, height, how it sits beside a band Final metal color, weight and stone brilliance

The render is for design decisions. The replica is for scale. Together they answer most questions couples worry about when buying a ring they have not seen.

What do you see in a 3D ring design preview?

A good preview lets you check the ring from the angles that matter in daily life, not only the top view in an inspiration photo.

  • Top view: the stone shape, the halo or side stones, and the prongs.
  • Side view: how high the stone sits and the shape of the basket or gallery.
  • Profile through the band: band width and any hidden details underneath.
  • On-hand view, when available: a sense of scale against a finger.

How should you review a CAD design?

  1. Compare it with your reference photo side by side. Look at the overall feeling first, then the details.
  2. Check the side view for height. A tall setting can snag and may not sit flush with a wedding band.
  3. Look at prong count and shape. Corners and points on cushion, princess, pear and marquise stones need protection.
  4. Confirm the stone size in millimeters, not only carats.
  5. Ask for changes until it is right. The preview is the time to adjust.

Our guide to custom engagement ring mistakes lists the proportion issues worth checking.

Which changes are easy at the CAD stage?

Almost everything is easier to change in the model than in metal. Common edits include band width, setting height, prong style, halo size and the shape of the gallery.

Stone shape and size also change here. Switching from a round to an oval, for example, means the setting is redrawn around the new stone.

Metal color is chosen separately. You pick 14K or 18K yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum, and the stone: natural diamond, lab-created diamond, moissanite or a colored gemstone.

Why add a 3D-printed replica?

A render on a phone screen can make a ring look larger or smaller than it is. A replica on your finger removes that doubt.

Our $199 Try It In Real Life replica is available for any ring design, in sizes 4 to 13 including half sizes. You keep it.

The full $199 is credited on orders of $1,000 or more, and the credit never expires.

Frequently asked questions

What is a CAD engagement ring? It is an engagement ring designed as a 3D computer model before it is made. You review and approve the model, then the ring is produced from it.

Is a CAD render accurate? It is precise in measurements, but a screen cannot show true scale on your hand or real sparkle. A printed replica fills that gap.

Can I make changes to my 3D ring design? Yes. The preview stage is for changes, and we adjust until it is right.

Do I keep the 3D-printed replica? Yes. The $199 replica is yours, and the $199 is credited on orders of $1,000 or more.

Can CAD recreate a ring from an old photo? Yes. Send the clearest photos you have, and our designers rebuild the ring in 3D for you to approve.
