Custom Ring From a Sketch: Turning a Drawing Into a Real Ring

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

Yes, a jeweler can turn your sketch into a real ring. Draw the idea, even roughly, label the stone shape, metal and band width, and send it with your ring size and budget. Our designers rebuild it in 3D, you approve the design preview, and we handcraft the ring in our Los Angeles workshop. You do not need to draw well; you need to show what you love.

Can a rough sketch really become a ring?

Yes. Many of our custom rings start on a napkin, a notebook page or a phone drawing app. Clients worry their drawing is not good enough, but proportions are our job.

A sketch tells us things a store photo cannot: what you imagine, what you want emphasized, and what you want left out. That is the heart of a one-of-a-kind ring.

Send it through our custom ring from a photo page; a photo of your sketch works the same way.

What should you label on your drawing?

A few notes on the page answer most of our questions before we ask them. Write them right next to the drawing.

  • Center stone shape: round, oval, emerald cut, pear, marquise, heart or cushion.
  • Stone type and color: natural diamond, lab-created diamond, moissanite or a colored gemstone.
  • Metal: 14K or 18K yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum.
  • Band width and style: thin, medium or bold; plain, pavé, twisted or split.
  • Setting: prongs, bezel, halo, hidden halo or a sculpted motif.
  • Anything symbolic: initials, a flower, a date to engrave.

Draw the ring from the top and, if you can, from the side. The side view shows how high the stone sits, which changes how the ring wears every day.

If you are unsure about something, write a question mark. We will propose options and show them in 3D.

From sketch to finished ring: what you approve at each stage

Here is how a drawing moves through our process, and where you stay in control.

Stage What happens What you approve
1. Sketch You send your drawing with ring size, budget and date if known Nothing yet; there is no cost to ask
2. 3D design Our designers rebuild the sketch as a 3D model, filling gaps with balanced proportions Whether the model captures your idea
3. Design preview You review the preview and request changes until it's right Final shape, proportions and details
4. Optional $199 replica A 3D-printed Try It In Real Life replica of your design, sized for you Scale and comfort on your actual hand
5. Handcrafted ring We make the ring to order in our Los Angeles workshop with conflict-free stones Your chosen stone and metal

The design preview is the key step. Nothing is made until you are happy with it.

How do designers fill the gaps in a drawing?

Sketches leave out measurements, and that is fine. We use your ring size and the stone you choose to set sensible proportions for the band, prongs and gallery.

For example, a 1 carat round is about 6.5 mm across on our product pages, and a 1 carat oval or pear is longer and narrower. We scale the setting around the real stone.

If your drawing shows something that would be fragile in metal, such as a very thin petal or an unsupported point, we suggest a stronger version that keeps the look.

Which stone and metal should you pick for your design?

Choice Why choose it
Natural diamond The classic center; hardest gemstone (Mohs 10)
Lab-created diamond Diamond hardness and sparkle with more size for the budget
Moissanite Very bright, durable (Mohs 9.25) and budget-friendly
Colored gemstone Ruby or sapphire (Mohs 9) add color and suit floral or vintage sketches
14K or 18K gold, or platinum Yellow, white or rose gold change the mood; platinum is a dense white metal

Should you try your design on before it is made?

A drawing on paper and a ring on your hand can feel very different. Our $199 Try It In Real Life replica is a 3D-printed model of your design in sizes 4 to 13, including half sizes.

You keep the replica, and the full $199 is credited on orders of $1,000 or more. Tell us your date when you send the sketch, and we'll confirm the timeline before you order.

You work directly with me, Yaniv Segal, as founder and designer. Every ring includes free engraving, free 60-day resizing, free worldwide shipping and a lifetime warranty.

Starting points you can customize

If you are not ready to draw, start with a design close to your idea and sketch the changes on top. On ring product pages, the main photo switches to the exact metal and stone you select.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be good at drawing? No. A rough sketch with a few labels is enough; we handle proportions and show you the result in 3D.

Can I send a drawing from my phone or tablet? Yes. A digital drawing, a scan or a photo of a paper sketch all work.

What if my design is not practical to make? We suggest a sturdier version that keeps the look, and you approve it in the design preview.

Can I add engraving to my sketch design? Yes. Engraving is free, so add initials or a date to your notes.

How much does a ring from a sketch cost? It depends mostly on the stone, carat and metal. Send the sketch with your budget for a quote, at no cost to ask.
