Can You Choose Your Own Jeweler for a Jewelry Insurance Claim?

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

Often yes, but it depends on your policy. Some jewelry insurers, such as Jewelers Mutual, let you pick your jeweler and pay that jeweler directly. Other insurers prefer to replace through their own suppliers or pay cash. Ask your adjuster in writing whether you can name your jeweler, and how much they will pay if you do.

How do insurers settle a jewelry claim?

There are three common ways. Your policy wording, not the adjuster's preference, decides which ones you are entitled to.

Settlement How it works Who picks the jeweler
Repair or replacement through your jeweler You choose the jeweler; the insurer approves the estimate and pays the jeweler You
Replacement through the insurer's supplier The insurer orders a piece of the same kind and quality from a supplier it works with The insurer
Cash settlement The insurer pays you an amount, and you decide what to do with it You, with the cash

Jewelers Mutual describes its process this way: you pick your jeweler, it requires only one estimate, it covers the current cost of a replacement of the same kind and quality up to your coverage limit, and you pay any deductible directly to the jeweler. You can also upgrade by paying the jeweler the difference.

This guide is general information, not insurance or legal advice. Your policy wording decides what is covered, so check it or ask your agent.

What should you ask your adjuster?

  • Can I use a jeweler of my choice for the replacement?
  • If I choose my own jeweler, will you pay their estimate in full, or a lower amount?
  • If you offer cash, how exactly was the amount calculated?
  • Do you pay the jeweler directly, or reimburse me?
  • What specs will the replacement have to match: metal, carat, color, clarity, measurements?
  • Is there a deadline to choose replacement or cash?

Get the answers by email. If your insurer's supplier proposes a ring that doesn't look like yours, a written estimate from a jeweler who can match it gives you something concrete to point to.

How does Segal work with your insurer?

At Segal we work with you whichever way your claim goes:

  • Your insurer pays us directly. If your policy lets you choose your jeweler, name Segal. We send the insurer our estimate, they pay us, and you pay only your deductible or any upgrade.
  • We send a written replacement quote. A detailed quote on Segal letterhead with the metal, stones, carat weights, measurements and price, ready to submit with your claim.
  • You pay us and claim it yourself. Order like any custom ring and send your insurer our invoice.
  • No insurance? We design to your budget, for example with a lab-created diamond or moissanite center.

Our written quote lists the metal and karat, the center stone's shape, carat weight, color and clarity, its measurements, the side stones, the setting style and the total price. If you have an appraisal or a diamond report, we match the replacement to those specs.

What happens after your insurer approves Segal?

  • We send the insurer our written estimate and they approve it
  • We rebuild the ring in 3D and you approve the design preview
  • If you want, you try a $199 replica of the design on your hand first
  • We handcraft the ring in Los Angeles and ship it to you free
  • The insurer pays us, and you pay only your deductible or any upgrade you chose
  • You tell your insurer the ring has been replaced, so the new piece can be added to your policy

You stay the decision-maker throughout: nothing is made until you approve the design.

What if the insurer's replacement doesn't match your ring?

Custom and unusual designs are hardest for a catalog supplier to match. Replacements are generally meant to be of the same kind and quality as the original, so show your adjuster your photos and our design preview, and ask whether the insurer will approve a re-creation.

We recreate classic and unbranded designs: solitaires, halos and hidden halos, three-stone rings, pavé and eternity bands, vintage-style rings and pieces an independent jeweler made for you. If your ring was a signature design from a named brand or another artist, contact us first. We don't copy other designers' work, but we'll tell you honestly what we can make.

Frequently asked questions

Can the insurer force me to use their jeweler? Some policies give the insurer the option to replace through its own supplier. Read the loss settlement section of your policy and ask your adjuster in writing.

Do I pay Segal anything if the insurer pays you directly? Only your deductible, if your policy has one, and the difference if you choose to upgrade.

Can you quote my insurer if I'm not in Los Angeles? Yes. We work by email with clients everywhere and ship worldwide for free.

What if I want a different design than the one that was lost? Tell your adjuster. Some insurers allow it if you pay any difference; otherwise a cash settlement may suit you better.

Do you need the police report? We don't need it to start the design. Your insurer may need it for a theft claim.
