Jewelry Insurance: Take the Cash or the Replacement Ring?
Posted by YANIV SEGAL

A replacement gets you a ring of the same kind and quality, usually through a jeweler the insurer approves. A cash settlement gives you freedom, but it may be less than retail, because some insurers base it on what they would pay their own supplier. If your ring had a unique design, ask whether you can use your own jeweler first.

What is the difference between cash and replacement?
| Replacement | Cash settlement | |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A ring of the same kind and quality as the original | A payment |
| Who chooses the jeweler | You or the insurer, depending on your policy | You |
| Amount | The cost of the replacement, up to your coverage limit | An amount the insurer calculates; ask how |
| Best when | You want the same ring back | You want a different design or want to add your own money |
This guide is general information, not insurance or legal advice. Your policy wording decides what is covered, so check it or ask your agent.
Why can a cash offer come in low?
Some insurers work with jewelry suppliers at pre-agreed prices, and base cash offers on what they would have paid that supplier rather than on the retail price you paid. Others deduct the deductible or, on actual cash value policies, depreciation.
Before accepting, ask the insurer to explain in writing how the amount was calculated, and compare it with a written replacement quote from a jeweler who can actually make your ring.
Replacement cost or actual cash value: which policy do you have?
Check your declarations page. A replacement cost policy pays what it costs to buy an item of the same kind and quality today. An actual cash value policy pays that cost minus depreciation, which can be much less for jewelry bought years ago. A scheduled item is usually settled on its own terms, up to the scheduled amount.
What should you ask before accepting a cash offer?
- How exactly was this amount calculated, and from which price?
- Is it based on a replacement through your supplier or on retail?
- Has the deductible or depreciation been taken off?
- Can I use a jeweler of my choice for a replacement instead?
- Is there a deadline to decide?
A worked example
These numbers are hypothetical, to show how the offers can differ. Say your ring was scheduled for $8,000, and your insurer can buy a similar ring from its supplier for $6,500.
| Option | What you would get |
|---|---|
| Cash based on the supplier's price | $6,500, minus any deductible |
| Replacement through the insurer's supplier | A similar ring the insurer chooses |
| Replacement through your chosen jeweler, if the policy allows | Your ring recreated, paid up to the $8,000 scheduled value |
The $1,500 gap between $8,000 and $6,500 is why it pays to ask, before accepting, whether you can choose your jeweler.
When is replacement the better choice?
- Your ring was custom or unusual, and you want it back exactly
- Your policy lets you choose your jeweler, so you control the result
- The cash offer is well below a real replacement quote
- You want the insurer to pay the jeweler directly, so you pay only your deductible
When is cash the better choice?
- You want a different style this time, or an upgrade
- You plan to combine the payout with your own budget
- You prefer a lab-created diamond or moissanite and want to keep the savings, where your policy allows it

Can you recreate the ring either way?
Yes. If you take replacement and your policy allows you to choose your jeweler, we work with your insurer directly. If you take cash, you order from us like any custom ring.
At Segal we work with you whichever way your claim goes:
- Your insurer pays us directly. If your policy lets you choose your jeweler, name Segal. We send the insurer our estimate, they pay us, and you pay only your deductible or any upgrade.
- We send a written replacement quote. A detailed quote on Segal letterhead with the metal, stones, carat weights, measurements and price, ready to submit with your claim.
- You pay us and claim it yourself. Order like any custom ring and send your insurer our invoice.
- No insurance? We design to your budget, for example with a lab-created diamond or moissanite center.
We recreate classic and unbranded designs: solitaires, halos and hidden halos, three-stone rings, pavé and eternity bands, vintage-style rings and pieces an independent jeweler made for you. If your ring was a signature design from a named brand or another artist, contact us first. We don't copy other designers' work, but we'll tell you honestly what we can make.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take cash and still get the same ring made? Yes. Send us your photos and paperwork and we'll quote the recreated ring so you can compare it with the offer.
Is a replacement always identical to the original? It should be the same kind and quality. Custom details are where catalog replacements often fall short, so compare photos before accepting.
Can I negotiate a cash offer? You can ask how it was calculated and provide a written quote from a jeweler. Whether the insurer changes the offer depends on your policy.
What if my ring was a designer brand? We don't copy other designers' signature work. Contact us and we'll tell you honestly what we can make.
Do you charge for a quote? No. There is no cost to ask.
