How to Replace a Lost Ring Using Your Appraisal
Posted by YANIV SEGAL

Your appraisal is the blueprint for a replacement. It lists the metal and karat, the center stone's shape, carat weight, measurements, color and clarity, and the side stones. Send it with your photos and a jeweler can match the ring spec for spec, and give your insurer an exact replacement quote.

What is on a jewelry appraisal?
Appraisals vary in layout, but most list the same core details. Here is what each line tells the jeweler rebuilding your ring. The examples are illustrations, not real figures.
| Appraisal line | Example | Why it matters for the replacement |
|---|---|---|
| Metal and karat | 14K white gold | Sets the color, durability and price of the mounting |
| Center stone shape and cut | Round brilliant | Defines the look of the ring |
| Carat weight | 1.02 ct | Drives most of the price of a diamond ring |
| Measurements | 6.45 x 6.48 x 3.98 mm | Lets us match the face-up size exactly |
| Color and clarity | G / VS2 | What a like-for-like replacement has to equal |
| Lab report number | A GIA or IGI report number | Confirms every grade and can be checked online |
| Side stones | 24 round diamonds, 0.30 ct total | Sets the pavé or halo details |
| Replacement value | A dollar amount | Often the amount your ring was insured for |
This guide is general information, not insurance or legal advice. Your policy wording decides what is covered, so check it or ask your agent.
What if the appraisal is old?
The specs on an old appraisal are still accurate: a 1.02 carat G VS2 diamond is the same stone ten years later. What changes is the price to replace it today. That is why insurers settle on the current cost of a replacement of the same kind and quality, and why a fresh written quote helps your claim.
Why do the measurements matter more than the carat weight?
Two diamonds with the same carat weight can look different sizes from above, depending on how they were cut. The measurements on your appraisal tell us the face-up size you saw on your hand every day, so we match those, not just the weight.
| Round diamond | Typical face-up size |
|---|---|
| 0.5 ct | About 5 mm |
| 1 ct | About 6.5 mm |
| 1.5 ct | About 7.3 mm |
| 2 ct | About 8 mm |
| 3 ct | About 9.1 mm |
These are the sizes we use on our product pages. Your appraisal's measurements override them.
Natural or lab-created on a replacement?
A like-for-like insurance replacement generally means a natural diamond replaced with a natural diamond of the same grades. If you are paying yourself, or your insurer allows it, a lab-created diamond with the same specs looks the same and costs less.
No appraisal? Use these instead
- The receipt, which usually lists the metal, stone type and carat
- A diamond report. GIA reports can be looked up online by report number
- The jeweler you bought from, who may still have your order on file
- Photos: proposal, wedding and close-up hand shots for the design details
- Your ring size, or another ring that fits the same finger

How does Segal replace a ring from an appraisal?
Send us the appraisal and your photos. We rebuild the mounting in 3D from your photos, match the stones to the appraisal specs, and you approve the design preview. Then we handcraft it in Los Angeles.
At Segal we work with you whichever way your claim goes:
- Your insurer pays us directly. If your policy lets you choose your jeweler, name Segal. We send the insurer our estimate, they pay us, and you pay only your deductible or any upgrade.
- We send a written replacement quote. A detailed quote on Segal letterhead with the metal, stones, carat weights, measurements and price, ready to submit with your claim.
- You pay us and claim it yourself. Order like any custom ring and send your insurer our invoice.
- No insurance? We design to your budget, for example with a lab-created diamond or moissanite center.
We recreate classic and unbranded designs: solitaires, halos and hidden halos, three-stone rings, pavé and eternity bands, vintage-style rings and pieces an independent jeweler made for you. If your ring was a signature design from a named brand or another artist, contact us first. We don't copy other designers' work, but we'll tell you honestly what we can make.

Frequently asked questions
Can you match the exact diamond on my appraisal? We match the specs: shape, carat weight, measurements, color and clarity. A natural diamond can be matched with a natural diamond of the same grades.
Can I choose a lab-created diamond instead? If you are paying yourself, yes, and it lowers the price. If your insurer is paying, ask whether your policy allows it.
Do you need the original appraisal document? A clear photo or scan of it is enough.
Will you write a quote my insurer can use? Yes. We send a written replacement quote on Segal letterhead listing every spec and the price.
What if my appraisal and my photos disagree? We point out the difference and you decide. The 3D design preview lets you compare against your photos before anything is made.
