Lost Your Engagement Ring? How to Recreate It From Photos

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

If you lost your engagement ring, you can have it recreated from photos. Gather close-ups from the proposal, wedding and social posts, plus any receipt, certificate or appraisal and your ring size. We rebuild the ring in 3D, you approve the design preview, and we handcraft it in Los Angeles. The more you send, the closer the match.

Can a lost or stolen engagement ring be recreated?

Losing an engagement ring is painful, whether it slipped off at the beach or was taken in a break-in. The good news is that the design itself is rarely lost.

Photos, paperwork and your own memory hold most of what a jeweler needs. Our custom ring from a photo service turns those pieces back into the ring you know.

We make an original piece built to match your ring, not a copy of a branded designer model. If your ring was a signature design from another house, we create our own version inspired by it.

What should you gather before contacting a jeweler?

Start with your phone's photo library and search for the proposal date, the wedding and any close-up hand shots. Then check email for receipts and insurance documents.

What to gather What it tells the jeweler
Proposal and wedding photos Overall design, stone shape, setting style and how the ring sat on your hand
Close-up or social media hand shots Prong count, halo or pavé details, band profile
Side-angle photos Setting height, hidden halo or gallery details under the stone
Receipt or stone certificate Carat weight, cut, color and clarity to match the center stone
Insurance appraisal Metal, measurements and a written description of every stone
Your ring size Correct fit from the start, so no resizing is needed
Band width (if known) Exact proportions and matching with your wedding band
Your wedding band, if you still have it The best reference for curve, width and fit of the pair

Do not worry if you have only some of these. A single clear photo plus your ring size is enough to begin.

How do you match the center stone?

A certificate or appraisal is the most precise record, because it lists the carat weight and measurements. With it, we can match the face-up size closely.

Without paperwork, we estimate from photos. For reference, a 1 carat round measures about 6.5 mm and a 2 carat round about 8 mm on our product pages.

You can also use this moment to choose differently. Some couples pick a lab-created diamond or moissanite to keep the replacement within budget; others upgrade the carat.

Round carat Face size on our product pages
0.5 ct 5 mm
1 ct 6.5 mm
1.5 ct 7.3 mm
2 ct 8 mm
3 ct 9.1 mm

How does recreating a lost engagement ring work at Segal?

  1. Send your photos and any documents, plus ring size, budget and date if you have one. There is no cost to ask.
  2. Our designers rebuild the ring in 3D, and you approve a design preview, with changes until it matches your memory.
  3. Choose the stone (natural diamond, lab-created diamond, moissanite or colored gemstone) and the metal (14K or 18K yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum).
  4. Optionally order the $199 Try It In Real Life replica to compare it with your old photos on your own hand.
  5. We handcraft the ring to order in our Los Angeles workshop with conflict-free stones.

You work directly with me, Yaniv Segal, from the first photo to the finished ring. Tell us your date when you send the photo, and we'll confirm the timeline before you order.

Why approve a 3D preview and a replica?

Memory plays tricks, especially with scale. A stone you remember as large may have been a 1 carat set in a halo.

The 3D preview lets you compare the new design against your photos side by side. Small details, such as prong shape or band taper, are easy to adjust at this stage.

The $199 Try It In Real Life replica goes one step further. You keep it, and the full $199 is credited on orders of $1,000 or more.

What about insurance?

If your ring was insured, contact your insurer first and ask what documents they need. Policies differ, so we cannot advise on your claim.

What we can do is quote the recreated ring once the design is clear. Your appraisal and photos help us make that quote accurate.

Starting points close to your lost ring

If one of our designs is close to your ring, it can speed up the conversation. On ring product pages, the main photo switches to the exact metal and stone you select.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recreate my ring from just one photo? Often, yes. One clear photo plus your ring size is enough to start, and the 3D design preview lets you confirm the details.

Do I need the original receipt or certificate? No, but it helps. A certificate or appraisal lists carat and measurements, which makes the stone match more precise.

Will the new ring be exactly the same? We aim to match the design you show us as closely as your photos allow, and you approve the 3D preview before we make it.

Can I change something while recreating it? Yes. Many couples upgrade the stone, switch metal or add free engraving with a new date.

Is my replacement ring covered? Every ring includes a lifetime warranty, free 60-day resizing and free worldwide shipping.
