Custom Lab Diamond Engagement Rings: What You Get for the Money
Posted by YANIV SEGAL

A custom lab diamond engagement ring is a ring designed around your idea, from a photo, sketch or existing style, and set with a lab-created diamond instead of a mined one. With us you send a photo, approve a 3D design preview, choose lab diamond and metal, and we handcraft it in Los Angeles. The design stays the same whichever stone you pick; only the stone changes.

What is a custom lab diamond engagement ring?
It is a one-of-a-kind or personalized ring where the center stone is a lab-created diamond. The design can start from scratch or from one of our existing rings.
A lab-created diamond is real diamond: the same carbon crystal, the same hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale. The difference is its origin, grown in a controlled environment rather than mined.
For a custom ring, that matters in one practical way. The setting, prongs, band and details are designed the same way whichever stone you choose.
How does the custom process work with a lab diamond?
We keep the process simple, and you work directly with me, Yaniv Segal, as founder and designer.
- Send a photo: a screenshot, an old family photo or a sketch, plus your ring size, budget and date if you know them.
- Our designers rebuild the ring in 3D and send you a design preview to approve, with changes until it's right.
- Choose your stone (lab-created diamond, natural diamond, moissanite or a colored gemstone) and your metal: 14K or 18K yellow, white or rose gold, or platinum.
- Optional: order the $199 Try It In Real Life 3D-printed replica to see the size on your hand.
- We handcraft the ring to order in our Los Angeles workshop with conflict-free stones.
Tell us your date when you send the photo, and we'll confirm the timeline before you order. It costs nothing to ask for a quote.
Send us your photoLab diamond vs natural diamond vs moissanite: which stone fits your custom ring?
All three work in the same custom setting. Here is how they compare on the points couples ask about most.
| Stone | Mohs hardness | Look | Relative price | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lab-created diamond | 10 | Diamond brilliance; same crystal as mined diamond | Usually well below a natural diamond of the same size | A real diamond with a bigger look for the budget |
| Natural diamond | 10 | Classic diamond brilliance | Highest of the three | Buyers who want a mined stone |
| Premium moissanite | 9.25 | Strong fire, more rainbow flashes | Usually the lowest of the three | The largest look for the lowest spend |
You can see the spread on our product pages. Our Isla No. 1 emerald cut solitaire runs from $1,620 to $212,273 across options, from moissanite up to large natural diamonds.
The exact price for your design depends on stone, carat and metal. Once you send a photo, we quote the combination you want.
What do you get for the money with a lab diamond?
The main gain is size. For the budget a natural stone would need, a lab diamond usually lets you move up in carat or put more into the setting.
Use our stone-size chart to picture the jump. On our product pages a 1 carat round measures 6.5 mm across, a 1.5 carat 7.3 mm and a 2 carat 8 mm.
| Round carat | Face size (our chart) | What it means on the hand |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ct | 6.5 mm | Classic, easy to wear daily |
| 1.5 ct | 7.3 mm | Noticeably fuller center |
| 2 ct | 8 mm | A popular target for lab diamond buyers |
| 3 ct | 9.1 mm | Statement size |
The second gain is room for detail. Savings on the center can pay for a hidden diamond, micro pavé, milgrain edges or an 18K or platinum band.

Do lab diamonds come with a certificate?
Many lab-created diamonds are graded by independent gem labs, the same way natural stones are. The report describes the stone's cut, color, clarity and carat.
When you request a quote, ask us what documentation comes with the stone you are considering. We will tell you before you order, so there are no surprises.
Same design, different stone: how the swap works
Most of our rings already offer stone options on the product page. You can see "Lab created Diamond", "Natural Diamonds" and "Premium Moissanite" side by side.
When you switch the stone or metal, the main photo switches to that exact version. You see the ring you are buying, not a generic stand-in.
For a custom design, the same logic applies. We build one 3D model, and you decide which stone goes into it.
- Start from a photo of a ring you love or one of our designs.
- Approve the 3D design preview before anything is made.
- Pick lab diamond, then choose carat and metal.
- Try the size with a $199 replica if you are unsure.
- Order, and we handcraft it in Los Angeles.
Is a lab diamond right for every custom design?
For nearly every setting, yes. A lab diamond has the same hardness as a mined one, so it suits prongs, bezels, halos and pavé equally well.
Some couples still prefer a natural stone for its origin story. Others want the fire of moissanite; our custom moissanite engagement ring guide covers that route.
If you are torn, design the ring first. The stone decision can come last.

See it on your hand before you commit
Our Try It In Real Life replica is a 3D-printed copy of your design for $199. You keep it, and the full $199 is credited on orders of $1,000 or more.
