Custom Cushion Cut Engagement Rings: Shapes, Settings and Price

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

A custom cushion cut engagement ring starts with two choices: a square or elongated cushion, and a setting that protects its rounded corners, such as four or eight prongs, a halo, a hidden halo or a vintage filigree. Send us a photo of the cushion ring you love, and we rebuild it in 3D for you to approve. Price is driven mostly by the stone you pick.

What is a cushion cut?

A cushion cut is a square or rectangular stone with softly rounded corners and curved sides, like a pillow. It has large facets that give bold flashes of light.

The shape has a long history in antique jewelry, which is why cushion rings feel both romantic and classic. It suits halos, vintage settings and clean modern designs alike.

Square or elongated cushion: which should you choose?

Cushions come in different outlines. The length-to-width ratio tells you how square or rectangular the stone looks.

Cushion outline Approximate ratio Look on the hand Good for
Square cushion About 1.00 to 1.05 Soft, balanced, classic Halos and vintage designs
Slightly elongated About 1.10 to 1.15 A gentle rectangle Couples between square and oval
Elongated cushion About 1.20 and above Longer, slimming on the finger Solitaires and three-stone rings

Neither is better. Square cushions feel traditional, while elongated cushions make the finger look longer. If your inspiration photo shows one, tell us and we keep that outline in the design.

Which setting works best for a cushion cut?

A cushion's corners are rounded, so it is less fragile than a princess cut. The corners still deserve protection, and the setting also changes how big the stone looks.

Setting Look Protects corners? Segal example
Solitaire (4 or 8 prongs) Clean, shows the full outline Yes, with a prong at each corner Built from your photo
Halo Bigger face-up size, extra sparkle Yes, small stones surround the edge Jade No. 24, from $4,828
Hidden halo Solitaire look from above, sparkle from the side Partly, supports the base Built from your photo
Vintage filigree Antique detail and milgrain Yes, when paired with corner prongs Elaina No. 45, from $6,640
Hidden diamond A surprise stone inside the band Depends on the head design Nova No. 8, from $5,252
Three-stone Center flanked by two side stones Yes, with corner prongs Built from your photo

Does a halo make a cushion look bigger?

Yes. A halo of small stones extends the visible outline, so the ring reads larger than the center alone. It is the classic way to get a big look with a smaller center.

A cushion halo also has a vintage feel, because the shape and the halo both trace back to older jewelry styles.

Prongs and corners: what to check in the design

  • Four prongs show more of the stone; eight prongs (a pair at each corner) add security.
  • Prongs should sit on the corners, where the stone is most exposed.
  • Check the side view so the setting is not so tall that it snags.
  • Plan the wedding band now, especially with a halo, so it can sit flush.

Our guide to the 3D design preview explains how to review these details before the ring is made.

Which stone should your cushion be?

You can choose a natural diamond, lab-created diamond, moissanite or a colored gemstone. The stone affects price more than anything else.

Moissanite (9.25 on the Mohs scale) keeps the budget lower. Lab-created and natural diamonds are both 10. Sapphire and ruby, at 9, make striking cushion centers, and emerald (7.5 to 8) suits a protective halo.

Frequently asked questions

Is a cushion cut good for an engagement ring? Yes. Its rounded corners are less prone to chipping than sharp corners, and it suits many settings.

Should I choose a square or elongated cushion? Square feels classic and suits halos; elongated looks longer on the finger and suits solitaires.

Does a cushion halo look bigger? Yes. The halo extends the visible outline, so the ring looks larger than the center stone alone.

How much does a custom cushion cut ring cost? It depends mostly on the stone and metal. The cushion designs in this guide start from $3,578, and we quote your photo at no cost.

Can you make a cushion ring from my photo? Yes. We design an original ring inspired by your photo and send a 3D preview to approve.
