Replacing Stolen Jewelry Without Insurance: Realistic Options
Posted by YANIV SEGAL

Without insurance, you can still replace a stolen ring for less than the original by keeping the design and changing the materials: a lab-created diamond or moissanite center, 14K gold instead of 18K or platinum, and any stones you still have reused. A jeweler can rebuild the design from photos and quote several versions so you choose.

Check for coverage you may have forgotten
- Homeowners or renters insurance. Even unscheduled jewelry is usually covered for theft up to a limit, generally $1,500.
- Credit card benefits. Some cards include purchase protection against theft for a limited time after purchase.
- A partner's or parent's policy, if you lived in their household.
This guide is general information, not insurance or legal advice. Your policy wording decides what is covered, so check it or ask your agent.
How can you keep the look and lower the price?
The center stone usually drives the price of an engagement ring, so it is where a replacement can change most while keeping the design you remember.
| Center stone | Look | Hardness (Mohs) | Price compared with natural diamond |
|---|---|---|---|
| Natural diamond | Classic white sparkle | 10 | Highest |
| Lab-created diamond | Physically and chemically diamond | 10 | Lower |
| Moissanite | Brilliant, with more colorful fire | 9.25 | Lower |
| Sapphire or ruby | Colored, very durable | 9 | Varies by quality |
Metal matters less but still counts: 14K gold costs less than 18K, and gold costs less than platinum. See what a lab diamond buys you and custom moissanite rings.

What does the same ring cost with each stone?
Here is one real design, the Solitaire Bezel Diamond Ring - Emerson No. 2 in 14K rose gold, priced on our site in October 2026 with each center stone:
| Center | Natural diamond | Lab-created diamond | Moissanite |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 ct (6.5 mm) | $7,870 | $3,229 (59% less) | $2,729 (65% less) |
| 2 ct (8 mm) | $32,627 | $4,680 (86% less) | $3,680 (89% less) |
The math for the 1 carat lab-created version: $7,870 minus $3,229 is $4,641, which is 59% of $7,870. Same design, same metal, same size on the hand.
Where else can you save without changing the look?
- Keep the shape, adjust the weight slightly. On the same design, a 0.84 carat (6 mm) natural diamond is $6,349 against $7,870 for 1 carat (6.5 mm): $1,521 or 19% less for half a millimeter.
- Choose a hidden halo or a halo. A ring of small diamonds makes a smaller center look larger.
- Pick 14K gold. It is harder-wearing for everyday use and costs less: $573 less than 18K on the 1 carat natural version above.
- Reuse what you have. Recovered stones go into the new ring, and old gold is credited toward it.
- Add details later. A matching band or upgraded stone can come later; every Segal ring includes a lifetime upgrade.
What should you ask any jeweler quoting a replacement?
- Will I see a 3D design preview before you make it?
- Can you quote the same design with different stones?
- What warranty, resizing and return terms come with it?
- Can I try it on before it is made?

Send your photos and your budget. We rebuild the design in 3D and can quote it with a natural diamond, a lab-created diamond and moissanite side by side, so you choose with real numbers. Need time? Ask about starting with a deposit.
Still have the stones, or a damaged piece? We can set your recovered stones in the new ring, and your old or damaged gold is credited toward the new piece.
We recreate classic and unbranded designs: solitaires, halos and hidden halos, three-stone rings, pavé and eternity bands, vintage-style rings and pieces an independent jeweler made for you. If your ring was a signature design from a named brand or another artist, contact us first. We don't copy other designers' work, but we'll tell you honestly what we can make.
