Ring Lost or Stolen While Traveling: What to Do Next

Updated October 2026 · By Yaniv Segal, founder of Segal Jewelry, Los Angeles

If your ring goes missing on a trip, report it right away to the hotel, airline or cruise line and to local police, and keep written copies of each report. Call your insurer before you fly home: many policies cover jewelry away from home, but theft limits still apply. Then send photos to a jeweler to start the replacement.

Who do you report a lost or stolen ring to while traveling?

Where it happened Report it to Ask for
Hotel room or lobby Front desk or security, and local police A written incident report and the police report number
Airport or flight The airline's baggage or lost and found desk, and the airport's lost and found A reference number for your report
Beach, pool or ski slope Lifeguards or the venue's lost and found, and local police Their contact details, in case it is turned in
Cruise ship Guest services and ship security A written report before you disembark
Rental car or taxi The rental company or ride service A case number

Lost or stolen: why does it matter?

Insurance treats the two differently. A standard homeowners or renters policy covers theft, including many thefts away from home, up to the jewelry theft limit, generally $1,500. Simply losing a ring is usually not covered unless it was scheduled on a floater, which typically covers accidental loss.

This guide is general information, not insurance or legal advice. Your policy wording decides what is covered, so check it or ask your agent.

  • Report it the same day, wherever you are
  • Get every report in writing, with names and reference numbers
  • Photograph where you last saw it
  • Call your insurer from the trip and ask what they need
  • Keep your travel booking as proof of where you were

If it was lost outdoors, a local metal detecting specialist may still find it; see our lost ring search checklist.

What if the report is in another language?

Ask the local police or the hotel for a copy you can take with you, and note the officer's name, the station and the report number. Your insurer will tell you if it needs a translation. Keep your booking confirmation, your flight details and any messages with the hotel as supporting evidence of where you were and when.

How can you travel with jewelry more safely?

  • Bring only the pieces you will wear
  • Keep rings in your carry-on, never in checked luggage
  • Use the room safe, and take rings off only in the room
  • Take rings off before swimming, skiing or applying sunscreen, where they slip off more easily
  • Photograph what you pack before you leave, so you have a dated record

Proposing or honeymooning abroad?

Schedule the ring on your insurance before you leave, so it is covered for loss as well as theft. Keep the proposal ring in your carry-on, not in a suitcase. After the proposal, take daylight photos of the ring on the hand, from the top and the side: they become your record if anything happens later.

How do you replace a ring lost on a trip?

You don't need to be in Los Angeles. Email us your photos and any appraisal, and we design, approve and ship by mail. Shipping is free worldwide.

At Segal we work with you whichever way your claim goes:

  • Your insurer pays us directly. If your policy lets you choose your jeweler, name Segal. We send the insurer our estimate, they pay us, and you pay only your deductible or any upgrade.
  • We send a written replacement quote. A detailed quote on Segal letterhead with the metal, stones, carat weights, measurements and price, ready to submit with your claim.
  • You pay us and claim it yourself. Order like any custom ring and send your insurer our invoice.
  • No insurance? We design to your budget, for example with a lab-created diamond or moissanite center.

We recreate classic and unbranded designs: solitaires, halos and hidden halos, three-stone rings, pavé and eternity bands, vintage-style rings and pieces an independent jeweler made for you. If your ring was a signature design from a named brand or another artist, contact us first. We don't copy other designers' work, but we'll tell you honestly what we can make.
